As a place with mind-numbing diversity of religious, ethnic, linguistic, political, and socio-cultural features, India offers a rich and complex intellectual journey. For Furman, India represents a new initiative. The successful Winter 2008 was the inaugural year for Furmans India program. It continues to be the aim of the Fall 2009 program that Furman students will act not as passive observers as if India is a spectacle to be viewed, experienced, and consumed. Instead, program directors will ensure that Furman students will enter substantive engagements over perspectives and ways of thinking about the past, the present, and the future of India.
The worlds largest democracy, home to some of the oldest human civilizations, an important player in a burgeoning global economy, second most populated country in the world: these are just a few of the hyperbolic features of India.
The Fall 2009 program will begin with intensive Hindi language study at Furman, followed by a one month travel program from north to south India, and will close with a one month residential experience at Madras Christian College (MCC). The application deadline for India 2009 has passed. Check back for trip highlights and information for our next trip!
