LET'S TALK MERGER!

Making Sense of Mergers

As corporate mergers, a sagging economy and government buyouts of beleaguered firms make national headlines, Furman hosted a panel that will help participants understand the strategies and communication behind mergers and takeovers.

Let’s Talk Merger” was held Thursday, September 18.  The event co-sponsored by the Departments of Business and Accounting and Economics featured five esteemed panelists.  Ken Peterson, economic professor, moderated the event.

This panel discussion offered an opportunity to understand the goals of mergers and acquisitions and to become familiar with the players,” says Kirk Karwan, chair of the business department.  “Students also had time to network with the five high-powered participants: an investment banker, a federal regulator, an attorney, a partner in an accounting firm, and a bank CEO.”

Entrepreneurship News.  Furman is also making a move to be more visible in the real world of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.  On March 25 and 26, twenty-eight Furman students attended Greenville’s INNOVENTURE conference at the Carolina First Center to learn more about start-up companies, venture capital, and economic development in the state and region.  Students interviewed budding entrepreneurs, observed 10-minute ‘elevator pitches’ that were made by entrepreneurs to potential investors, and attended inspirational talks about what it takes to be successful.  For more information, take a look at www.innoventuresc.com.

Another group of Furman students, including Michael Zettler (Computer Science), Jay Schmidt (Political Science), Laura Trostle (Accounting), Justin McCoy (Accounting), Cam Babbitt (Business Administration), and Chris Becker (Business Administration) are representing the university at a very different gathering of budding entrepreneurs at the end of the month.  They will be attending the Entreprelliance conference at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.  The group is looking to network  with representatives from a number of other student entrepreneurship organizations that were founding members of this national organization.  See www.entreprelliance.org  for more details.
