In 2007 Furman University was awarded a subgrant by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers to conduct the Critical Language Scholarship program under the National Security Language Initiative. This program is designed to enable American students to gain and improve Chinese language proficiency in an overseas language institute that offers an intensive language immersion experience. Working closely with Soochow University in Suzhou, China, we have successfully run this program in the summers of 2007, 2008, and 2009.
