Africa Study Abroad at Furman University

Dr. Don Gordon of Furman's Political Science Department began the Africa program in 1983 and has taken students
to Africa every other year
since.

Originally, the Political Science and Religion Departments spent three weeks each in Africa and the Middle East.
The Africa leg included only Kenya at first, but in 1989
Dr. Gordon began to include Tanzania.

In 2000, Dr. Gordon redesigned the Africa program significantly. Instead of traveling for three weeks in East Africa, Furman students spent six weeks in Southern Africa, mainly in South Africa. Dr. Gordon also invited Dr. Erik Ching of the History Department to serve as co-coordinator or the program. Dr. Gordon and Dr. Ching have led four past trips in 2000, 2003, 2005, and 2007.

Dr. Erik Ching and Dr. Kristy Maher, Sociology co-directed the trip in 2009 and Dr. Maher plans to direct in 2010 and 2011.

Below are links to specific descriptions of the 2003 and 2007 excursions. There are no webpages for the 2000, 2005, or 2009 trips at this point in time. Please browse the websites to find photos, itineraries, quotes from student participants, and selections from their journals.

The program will be going again in Spring 2010 and 2011. Please click on the 2011 link below for information on the upcoming trip.
