Greenville, S.C. -- South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Joe Erwin today announced that "NBC Nightly News" Anchor Tom Brokaw will serve as the moderator of the January 29, 2004 Democratic Presidential Debate. The debate, to be held in Greenville, South Carolina's Peace Center for the Performing Arts, falls just two days after the New Hampshire Primary and five days prior to South Carolina's First-in-the-South Primary. The event will be co-sponsored by the South Carolina Democratic Party and the Young D_emocrats of South Carolina.
"Having Tom Brokaw moderate this nationally-televised debate from Greenville is an honor. Tom is one of the most respected broadcast journalists in America, and will ask the candidates the hard questions they must answer to win the Democratic nomination," said Erwin. Erwin noted that all nine of the announced Democratic Presidential candidates are expected to participate in the event, awaiting final confirmation from both Senator John Kerry and General Wesley Clark.
As previously announced, the 7:00pm ET debate will be aired live nationwide on MSNBC and Telemundo, and on South Carolina's NBC affiliates: WYFF in Greenville, WIS in Columbia, and WCBD in Charleston. The event will also be carried live nationally on many radio stations affiliated with the NBC Radio Network, and will re-air on both MSNBC and CNBC.
Katie Fowler, President of the South Carolina Young Democrats, stated that the debate is generating excitement all over South Carolina. "Everywhere I go, from Beaufort to Spartanburg to Florence, there's a real buzz about this debate. Young voters are proud that South Carolina was chosen for this event, and that it will be nationally televised. Mr. Brokaw's involvement just makes it that much more exciting. I think it will help increase voter turnout at our Primary on February 3rd."
The Peace Center's Concert Hall holds approximately 2,100, and a ticketing plan is expected to be released later this month. Additional information regarding Brokaw's participation, as well as NBC's comprehensive coverage of the event, will be announced soon.
