Furman's Cultural Life Program is a graduation requirement; it should be taken as seriously as you would take your classes. This means being attentive to the performance or lecture and polite to other members of the audience. In keeping with this expectation, there are several specific and simple rules of conduct:

1. Find a seat before the performance or lecture begins. Arriving late disturbs the lecturer/performer and the other audience members. Students who arrive after the lecture or performance begins will not receive credit for the event.
    
2. If you arrive before the CLP worker, do not enter the room where the event is to be held. Please wait outside the door until the worker arrives.
    
3. Be attentive and courteous. Do not talk, read, sleep or study during the event. It is distracting to the lecturer/performer and the other audience members. There are typically more than 200 Cultural Life Events each year. Attend those that interest you.
    
4. Use of portable digital equipment such as laptops, MP3 players, and cell phones often distract the attendee and the audience and should be turned off during an event.
    
5. Unless it is provided by the lecturer/performer, no food or drink is permitted at CLP events.
    
6. Falsification of your own or someone else's attendance at a CLP event is a serious act of misconduct and subject to a hearing by the University Discipline committee (see "Administrative Policies: Cultural Life Program" in The Helmsman). Possible penalties include "revocation of any or all CLP credits earned, increase in the number of CLP credits required for graduation, suspension from the university for a fixed period, and/or permanent dismissal from the university" (The Helmsman).  Keep in mind that students are not allowed to turn in multiple cards at the end of an event. Each student should present his/her card to the CLP worker at the conclusion of the event.
    
7. CLP cards are collected at the conclusion of the event or when the sponsor determines that the portion of the event which confers CLP credit is concluded. You must attend throughout the designated period in order to receive credit.
    
8. Those who violate these rules will be asked to leave. If dismissed, an individual (or group) will not receive credit for attending the event. Any member of the faculty, administration, or university's professional staff has the authority to dismiss students who are not conducting themselves appropriately.
