Philosophy, Purpose and Description
Philosophy
The seal of Furman University proclaims an institutional commitment "For Christ
and Learning." Academic knowledge and spiritual exploration are vitally linked
in Furman's tradition. The motto "For Christ and Learning" is visibly present
in the life and ministry of the Chapel. It expresses in a symbolic and concrete
manner its heritage and hope, moral character and spiritual values. As an academic
community, the school gathers in this sacred space for worship, Religion-in-Life
lectures, celebrations such as weddings, recognition and commitments, and times
of remembrances such as funerals and memorial services. The Chapel provides a
place of meeting, a place of quiet, a visible reminder of the relationship between
the religious life and the academic search for truth.
Purpose
The primary purpose of the chapel is to serve the religious needs of the Furman
community. The Furman University community consists of students, graduates,
faculty, staff and their parents or children.
Description
The Charles E. Daniel Memorial Chapel has both a sanctuary
and a campus ministry level. The sanctuary level is sacred
space. Programming in this area is primarily university worship
services led by the chaplains and campus ministers, Religion-in-Life
lectures, weddings, funerals, meetings of religious organizations,
sacred concerts, and the Pastors' School.
Meeting rooms on the campus ministry level are primarily
for religious organizations, faculty or departmental meetings,
seminars, ministers' workshops, continuing education classes,
and receptions. The offices for the university chaplains,
campus ministers and Religious Council are also located on
this level. |
