Furman University Chaplaincy Internship

Furman University is offering an academic year chaplaincy internship for fall 2009/spring 2010. This internship will begin August 2009 and run through May 2010. The position is appropriate for a master's level theological (or related field) student desiring supervised field placement or as post-graduate field experience for those individuals interested in academic chaplaincy. Supervised by the University Chaplain's Office, this internship is full time and will involve work with a diverse student body, a world-class faculty, and a stellar University staff.

Furman University is an independent, coeducational liberal arts college of 2,600 students located at the base of the Blue Ridge mountains on a 750-acre campus near Greenville, South Carolina.  Furman provides a distinctive undergraduate education encompassing the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, mathematics and the natural sciences, and selected professional disciplines.  Furman emphasizes engaged learning, a hands-on, problem-solving, and collaborative educational philosophy that encourages students to put into practice the theories and methods learned from texts or lectures. The Furman Chaplaincy Internship offers:

  • Individual supervision

Qualifications for consideration:

  • Currently enrolled in a theological program at the Ph.D., D.Min., M.Div., or M.A. level, or
  • Currently enrolled in a social work master's program, or
  • Graduated from a master's/doctoral level program in theology or related field.
  • Personal experience in ministry
  • GPA of 3.0 or better

Requirements of the Intern:

  • 35-40 hours on site per week, including 8-10 client hours, supervision, training, record-keeping
  • Approximately 5 off-site hours for reading, study in preparation for supervision
  • One academic year commitment (no option for second year)
