Philosophy of the CDC
The staff of the Furman Child Development Center believes that children can grow and develop in unique ways. The program strives to meet their needs through an individualized approach to learning which stresses the child's active participation and exploration in a nurturing, supportive, child-centered atmosphere. Teachers offer children choices of activities and materials incorporating various developmental levels. Children's learning occurs naturally through play and teachers carefully guide children through age-appropriate activities, seeking to move them along sequentially and successfully.

The staff seeks to balance the children's interests and abilities with activities which challenge and "stretch" their development physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. The staff recognizes the important role family plays in each child's development. The center maintains an "open door" policy which encourages parental participation, visitation, and communication. Conferences are held on a regular basis and as requested by either the parents or the teacher.

Ages/Eligibility
The Center serves children ages three to five. Children must be three by September 1 in order to be enrolled for that school year. All children must be successfully potty-trained before entering the school. This means that children should be able to express to the staff their need to go to the bathroom. Having to periodically place children on the potty without notice or relying on pull-ups is not considered potty-trained.

Location
The Center operates in an interesting house located on campus in a grove of old oak trees one mile from McAlister Auditorium on Old Roe Ford Road. Take the Furman University exit from Highway 25 North. At the stop sign, turn right onto the traffic circle. After you pass McAlister Auditorium on your right, turn to the right and continue approximately one mile. The Center is the first house on the left after you cross the railroad tracks.
