FURMAN UNIVERSITY SUMMER SCHOLARS (high school) -- July 12-18, 2009 & July 19-25, 2009.

Furman's Summer Scholars programs include one- and two-week academic enrichment programs designed for rising high school juniors and seniors. Rising sophomores may be considered for certain programs. Students study in small group settings under the direction of Furman faculty members. Summer Scholars programs typically include a variety of learning experiences such as lectures, class discussions, debates, laboratory experiences, field trips, group and individual projects, and other activities intended to provide an enjoyable and challenging engaged learning experience.

THE RILEY INSTITUTE'S PROGRAM FOR EMERGING PUBLIC LEADERS (rising high-school seniors) -- June 21-27, 2009.

Emerging Public Leaders, which received a "South Carolina on the Move" award from U.S. Senator Jim DeMint in 2005, is an iexciting service-oriented leadership program open to rising high school seniors. This week-long summer program offers a series of experiences that enable students to become public leaders in both domestic and international arenas. The program is free of charge to all students who are selected to participate.

MICROSCOPE, KALEIDOSCOPE, TELESCOPE (rising 1st through 8th graders) -- June and July, 2009.

The "scopes" program is founded upon the belief that children will thrive in an environment in which they are challenged to think and question and can be playful and imaginative. Please note the following enrollment policies: For Kaleidoscope, Microscope, and Telescope, a non-refundable deposit of $100 per session reserves a place for your child. The tuition balance is due one month prior to each individual program session. Cancellation more than one month prior to session will refund tuition less the deposit.

Microscope -- rising 1st & 2nd graders

This full-day summer academic enrichment program with a science and nature focus is designed for rising first or second graders. Children participate daily in science, reading, art, music and outdoor sports. In addition to a structured schedule of "classroom" activities, there is also time for creek walks, quiet reflections and fun-and-tumble supervised games. Sessions are one or two weeks in length.

Kaleidoscope -- rising 3rd, 4th & 5th graders

Join us for summer academic adventuring! Kaleidoscope provides a never-ending variety of educational (science, social studies, fine arts, foreign language) and recreational experiences (nature walks, outdoor games and swimming). In the same day, you may play a drum, design a PowerPoint presentation, hit a ball, learn a Spanish phrase, observe a chemistry demonstration and make a new friend. Sessions are one or two weeks in length.

Telescope -- rising 6th, 7th & 8th graders

Telescope is an interactive summer program tailored especially for rising sixth through eighth graders which focuses on teamwork and creativity. The June session features elements of drama, designing and making your own puppet and creating and filming a cartoon. The July session focuses on scientific exploration with activities such as solving mysteries, launching a rocket and freezing a bubble. In addition to instruction, problem solving, and project time, each day includes art, outdoor games and swimming. Join us for a week or two of learning and fun!

MUSIC CAMPS

FURMAN BAND AND ORCHESTRA CAMP -- June 14-19, 2009.

For students ages 12-18 with intermediate to advanced training on a concert band instrument or orchestral string instrument. Students participate in large ensembles, small ensembles, master classes and sectional rehearsals supplemented by daily recreational and social activities. Private lessons are available for an additional fee.

FURMAN SUMMER KEYBOARD INSTITUTE -- June 21-26, 2009.

For intermediate and advanced piano students, ages 12-18. Primary areas of study: piano or organ. Secondary areas of study: piano, organ or ensemble piano. Students select primary and secondary areas of study, participating in small group classes, master classes, student recitals, faculty recitals and special topic sessions supplemented by daily recreational and social activities. Private lessons are available for an additional fee.

SOUTH CAROLINA SUZUKI INSTITUTE -- July 12-17, 2009.

The only program of its type in the state, the South Carolina Suzuki Institute offers an opportunity for students, parents and teachers to observe, study and improve their knowledge and skills in the Suzuki Music Method. The institute is for Suzuki-trained string and piano students, from Twinkle through Book 10. Teacher workshops and training sessions available. Certified by the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA). Parents of young children attend and observe all lessons and sessions.

BAND AND CHEERLEADING CAMPS

FURMAN CHEERLEADERS' CHEERLEADING SKILLS CAMP -- July 20-22, 2009.

Cheerleaders will be grouped according to age and skill level and will focus on skills development. Instructor-to-student ratios are 6-to-1 for the half day camp and 8-to1 for the full day camp. For three days, participants will work on cheers, jumps, stunts, dances, tumbling and crowd interaction. The camps will conclude with a performance allowing the cheerleaders to show off their new skills to parents, relatives and friends.

BICYCLE CAMPS

USA CYCLING ASSOCIATION CAMP FOR JUNIOR CYCLISTS -- June 7-12, 2009. For boys and girls ages 15-22. A comprehensive training camp for junior cyclists sponsored by the USA Cycling Association. Contact Richard Dunn at keyedgecycling@msn.com.

FURMAN MOUNTAIN BIKE YOUTH CAMPS -- June 15-17 & July 6-8, 2009. The Furman University Basic Mountain Bike Camp is designed for youth (suggested ages 8-12 years). It teaches safe riding with emphasis on trail-riding skills. Extensive, rigorous riding is done; this coeducational camp is not for beginning riders.

Participation is limited for each three-day session; pre-registration is required. Tuition is $95.00 per session; each rider must provide her/his own bicycle, an approved safety helmet, weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes (no sandals, slip-ons or flip-flops).

Camp is open to commuters and overnighters. Campers will learn overall offensive and defensive skills in the morning and receive specific position instruction in the afternoon. Campers will also play full games in the evenings and will be placed on teams based on their age and ability.

Boys & Girls Soccer Team Camp -- June 25-29, 2009. For ages 9-17 (boys and girls).
            Includes intensive training for teams on tactics, team building, re-starts, offensive and defensive strategies all applied in very competitive game situations.

Boys & Girls Soccer Residential Academy -- July 6-10, 2009. For ages 9-17 (boys and girls).
            The Residential Academy will provide the serious soccer player with an opportunity to improve their present skills and to effectively apply these skills in match situations.

Boys & Girls Senior Elite Academy -- July 6-10, 2009. For ages 15-18 (boys and girls).
            Intended for college-bound players with Elite Club, State Team or Regional Team experience, this camp will be conducted by college coaches representing all levels of NCAA programs.

Half-Day Camp -- July 20-24, 2009. For ages 5-7 (boys and girls); 8:30-11:30 a.m. daily.
            Educationally sound principles and methods of teaching soccer skills will be used in a fun environment.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING CAMPS

FIRST to the Finish Cross Country Running Camp (7th through 12th graders) -- July 12-17, 2009.

FIRST (Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training) will offer a running camp for novice runners to seasoned competitors, teams and individual runners. The FIRST Cross Country Camp will help middle and high-school runners develop and learn skills, techniques and strategies for cross-country. The camp will address all aspects of training and racing. Participants will take part in daily runs and drills and will participate in learning clinics.
