2008 Summer Youth Camps


ACADEMICS AND THE ARTS

SUMMER THEOLOGY INSTITUTE-- June 15-27. This program is for incoming Furman freshmen who desire to explore more deeply the potential meanings and purposes of their lives as they begin a new part of life's journey. Students find that this twelve-day experience of theological study, personal reflection, community service, play and friendship offers them new and meaningful insight about God's calling to all human beings to live responsibley in the world. Emphasis is placed on identifying and finding courage to act on one's own beliefs and unique gifts. FURMAN UNIVERSITY SUMMER SCHOLARS (high school) -- One or two week academic enrichment programs designed for rising juniors and seniors in high school (rising sophomores may be considered for certain programs). Students study under the direction of Furman faculty members in small group settings. Summer Scholars programs typically include a variety of learning experiences such as lectures, class discussions, debates, laboratory experiences, field trips, group and individual projects, and other activities intended to provide an enjoyable and challenging engaged learning experience for participants. THE RILEY INSTITUTE'S FOR EMERGING PUBLIC LEADERS PROGRAM -- July 22-28. Emerging Public Leaders, which received a "South Carolina on the Move" award from U.S. Senator Jim DeMint in 2005, is an iexciting service-oriented leadership program open to rising high school seniors. This week-long summer program offers a series of experiences that enable students to become public leaders in both domestic and international arenas.The program is free of charge to all students who are selected to participate. MICROSCOPE, KALEIDOSCOPE, TELESCOPE

The "scopes" program is founded upon the belief that children will thrive in an environment in which they are challenged to think and question, can be playful and imaginative. Please note the following enrollment policies: For Kaleidoscope, Microscope, and Telescope, a non-refundable deposit of $100 per session reserves a place for your child. Balance due and no refund one month prior to each indivdiual program session. Microscope

This full-day summer academic enrichment program with a science and nature focus is designed for rising first or second graders. Children participate daily in science, reading, art, music and outdoor sports. In addition to a structured schedule of "classroom" activities, there is also time for creek walks and quiet reflections and fun-and-tumble supervised games. Two sessions are two weeks in length and two sessions are one week in length.

Kaleidoscope

Bruce Cable, creative director, summer enrichment programs
Join us for summer academic adventuring with outstanding teacher Bruce Cable in his imaginative programming for children. Kaleidoscope provides a never-ending variety of educational (science, social studies, the arts, foreign language) and recreational experiences (nature walks, outdoor games). In the same day, you may play a drum, design a power point presentation, hit a ball, learn a Spanish phrase, observe a chemistry demonstration and make a new friend. Young people (rising third, fourth and fifth graders) can come for one or more of the sessions. There are two sessions of two weeks and two sessions of one week in length.

Telescope

Telescope is for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders. The program features classroom instruction with scientific experimentation and investigation which challenges thinking skills and creative problem-solving, while also including daily art and outdoor games. The goal of the program is greater middle school success, strengthened by expressing creativity, enriching interest areas and fostering cooperation and teamwork. There are sessions of both one week and of two weeks, so the content will differ.

MUSIC CAMPS

FURMAN BAND AND ORCHESTRA CAMP -- June 15-20. For students ages 12-18 with intermediate to advanced training on a concert band instrument or orchestral string instrument. Students participate in large ensembles, small ensembles, master classes and sectionals supplemented by daily recreational and social activities. Private lessons are available for an additional fee. FURMAN SUMMER KEYBOARD INSTITUTE -- June 22-27. For intermediate and advanced piano students, ages 12-18. Primary areas of study: piano or organ. Secondary areas of study: piano, organ or ensemble piano. Students select primary and secondary areas of study, participating in small group classes, master classes, student recitals, faculty recitals and special topic sessions supplemented by daily recreational and social activities. Private lessons are available for an additional fee. SOUTH CAROLINA SUZUKI INSTITUTE -- July 12-19. The only program of its type in the state, the Suzuki Institute offers an opportunity for students, parents and teachers to observe, study and improve their knowledge and skills in the Suzuki Music Method. For: Suzuki-trained string and piano students, from Twinkle through Book 10. Teacher workshops and training sessions available. Certified by the SAA. Parents of young children attend and observe all lessons and sessions. BAND AND CHEERLEADING CAMPS

FURMAN SUMMER CHEERLEADING CAMP - June 26-29.
The Furman cheerleaders are hosting a Cheerleading Skills camp at Furman University this summer. A half-day camp will be offered for cheerleaders who are entering kindergarten, 1st, 2nd or 3rd grades; a full-day camp will be offered for cheerleaders from 3rd grade on up. 
The camps focus on skill development. Cheerleaders will be grouped according to age and skill level. Instructor-to-student ratios are 6-to-1 for the half day camp and 8-to-1 for the full day camp. For three days, participants will work on cheers, jumps, stunts, dances, tumbling and crowd interaction. The camps will conclude with a performance allowing the cheerleaders to show off their new skills to parents, relatives and friends!

Half-day Cheer Camp:     8:30 - 11:30 am                                    $97.00
Full-day Cheer Camp:      8:30 -  3:30 pm (lunch included)      $130.00

Campers will learn overall offensive and defensive skills in the morning and specific position instruction in the afternoon. Campers will also play full games in the evenings and will be placed ont eams based on their age and ability. Junior day camp runs 8:30 am - 3:30 pm. CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING CAMPS

FIRST to the Finish Cross Country Running Camp - July 13-18 FIRST (Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training) will offer a running camp for novice runners to seasoned competitors: teams and individual runners. The FIRST Cross Country Camp will help high school runners (7th - 12th grade) develop and learn skills, techniques and strategies for cross-country. The camp addresses all aspects of training and racing.      Secret Agent Lab: Compare fingerprints and discover the mysteries of DNA as you fine tune your secret agent skills. Learn about bones and much more to become a Secret Agent!
     Space, Nature, and Secret Codes: Your Mad Scientist will learn how Newton's Laws are at work in their favorite sports. Discover how to send secret messages using special codes, explore their environment, and find out how science can  help us to protect our planet.
