Furman's Summer Scholars programs include one- and two-week academic enrichment programs designed for rising high school juniors and seniors. Rising sophomores may be considered for certain programs. Students study in small group settings under the direction of Furman faculty members. Summer Scholars programs typically include a variety of learning experiences such as lectures, class discussions, debates, laboratory experiences, field trips, group and individual projects, and other activities intended to provide an enjoyable and challenging engaged learning experience.

THE RILEY INSTITUTE'S PROGRAM FOR EMERGING PUBLIC LEADERS (rising high-school seniors)
-- June 20-26, 2010.

Emerging Public Leaders, which received a "South Carolina on the Move" award from U.S. Senator Jim DeMint in 2005, is an iexciting service-oriented leadership program open to rising high school seniors. This week-long summer program offers a series of experiences that enable students to become public leaders in both domestic and international arenas. The program is free of charge to all students who are selected to participate.

The "Scopes" program is founded upon the belief that children will thrive in an environment in which they are challenged to think and question and can be playful and imaginative.

Please note the following enrollment policies: For Kaleidoscope, Microscope, and Telescope, a non-refundable deposit of $100 per session reserves a place for your child. The tuition balance is due one month prior to each individual program session. Cancellation more than one month prior to session will refund tuition less the deposit; no refunds will be made within one month of a program session.

This full-day summer academic enrichment program with a science and nature focus is designed for rising first or second graders. Research shows how important it is for children to learn about and experience our natural world; through this program, they do just that! Children participate daily in science, reading, art, music, outdoor sports and swimming. In addition to a structured schedule of "classroom" activities, there is also time for creek walks, quiet reflections and fun-and-tumble supervised games. Sessions are one or two weeks in length.

Join us for summer academic adventuring! Kaleidoscope provides a never-ending variety of educational (science, social studies, fine arts, foreign language) and recreational experiences (nature walks, outdoor games and swimming). In the same day, you may play a drum, design a PowerPoint presentation, hit a ball, learn a Spanish phrase, observe a chemistry demonstration and make a new friend. Young people (rising third, fourth and fifth graders) can come for one or more sessions. Sessions are one or two weeks in length.

Telescope is an interactive summer program tailored especially for rising sixth through eighth graders which focuses on teamwork and creativity. The June session features elements of drama, designing and making your own puppet and creating and filming a cartoon. The July session focuses on scientific exploration with activities such as solving mysteries, launching a rocket and freezing a bubble. In addition to instruction, problem solving, and project time, each day includes art, outdoor games and swimming. Join us for a week or two of learning and fun!

MUSIC CAMPS

FURMAN BAND AND ORCHESTRA CAMP -- June 13-18, 2010.

For students ages 12-18 with intermediate to advanced training on a concert band instrument or orchestral string instrument. Students participate in large ensembles, small ensembles, master classes and sectional rehearsals supplemented by daily recreational and social activities. Private lessons are available for an additional fee.

FURMAN SUMMER KEYBOARD INSTITUTE -- June 20-25, 2010.

For intermediate and advanced piano students, ages 12-18. Primary areas of study: piano or organ. Secondary areas of study: piano, organ or ensemble piano. Students select primary and secondary areas of study, participating in small group classes, master classes, student recitals, faculty recitals and special topic sessions supplemented by daily recreational and social activities. Private lessons are available for an additional fee.

SOUTH CAROLINA SUZUKI INSTITUTE -- July 11-17, 2010.

The only program of its type in the state, the South Carolina Suzuki Institute offers an opportunity for students, parents and teachers to observe, study and improve their knowledge and skills in the Suzuki Music Method. The institute is for Suzuki-trained string and piano students, from Twinkle through Book 10. Teacher workshops and training sessions available. Certified by the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA). Parents of young children attend and observe all lessons and sessions.

Boys & Girls Soccer Team Camp -- June 24-28, 2010. For ages 9-17 (boys and girls).
            Includes intensive training for teams on tactics, team building, re-starts, offensive and defensive strategies all applied in very competitive game situations.

Boys & Girls Soccer Residential Academy -- July 5-9, 2010. For ages 9-17 (boys and girls).
            The Residential Academy will provide the serious soccer player with an opportunity to improve their present skills and to effectively apply these skills in match situations.

Boys & Girls Senior Elite Academy -- July 5-9, 2010. For ages 15-18 (boys and girls).
            Intended for college-bound players with Elite Club, State Team or Regional Team experience, this camp will be conducted by college coaches representing all levels of NCAA programs.

Goalkeeper Academy -- July 5-9, 2010. For ages 9-18 (boys and girls).
            This academy for goalkeepers is offered as a subset of both the Senior Elite and Residential programs; participants will receive specialized training during the day and participate in matches in the evenings.

Half-Day Camp -- July 19-23, 2010. For ages 5-7 (boys and girls); 8:30-11:30 a.m. daily.
            Educationally sound principles and methods of teaching soccer skills will be used in a fun environment.

Day Camp -- July 19-23, 2010. For ages 8-14 (boys and girls); 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily.
            Campers will learn the necessary skills, tactics, and fundamentals needed to perform in matches.

BICYCLE CAMPS

FURMAN MOUNTAIN BIKE YOUTH CAMPS -- June 14-16 & July 19-21, 2010, 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. daily.

2010 is the ninth year for the Furman University Basic Mountain Bike Camp, which is designed for youth ages 8-12. This program teaches safe riding with emphasis on trail-riding skills. Extensive, rigorous riding is done; this coeducational camp is not for beginning riders. Instruction includes bicycle riding safety; bike safety checks; proper mounting and dismounting; balance techniques; negotiating obstacles; proper braking and gearing; climbing and descending hills; and descending steps. Road safety riding is also practiced. Extensive trail riding is done in groups designated for different rider skill levels. Participants should be in good physical condition and capable of riding in rough terrain.

Participation is limited for each three-day session; pre-registration is required. Tuition is $95.00 per session, which includes lunch each day at Furman's dining hall and a t-shirt and certificate upon completion; each rider must provide her/his own mountain bike, an approved safety helmet, weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes (no sandals, slip-ons or flip-flops). This camp is conducted by Furman University police officers with specially-selected past participants as assistants. The student / counselor ratio is usually four to one.

FIRST to the Finish Cross Country Running Camp (7th through 12th graders) -- July 11-16, 2010.

FIRST (Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training) will offer a running camp for novice runners to seasoned competitors, teams and individual runners. The FIRST Cross Country Camp will help middle and high-school runners develop and learn skills, techniques and strategies for cross-country. The camp will address all aspects of training and racing. Participants will take part in daily runs and drills and will participate in learning clinics.

RUGBY CAMPS

SOUTH ELITE RUGBY ACADEMY (high-school students) -- June 10-14, 2010.

The SERA camp is designed for the high school rugby player (those with three years or less playing experience). The academy will partner with each camper to build a solid rugby foundation by emphasizing fundamentals along with skills and techniques that are coached to All-Star teams and the USA All-American team. Participants will learn in a fun, highly-structured environment that fosters good sportsmanship, a mastery of basic skills and spirited competition. While coaching and teaching rugby is our number-one priority, our campers will enjoy a variety of interactive activities including swimming, group games, hikes, movies and more.

ROLLER SKATING CAMPS

ROLLER TIME SKATING ACADEMY (ages 4-12) -- July 12-16, 2010, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. daily.
Camp costs: $99 weekly ($85 siblings) or $22 daily ($20 siblings); registration fee $25 ($15 siblings)

Come join the fun! Lead instructor Angela Pitts is a Multi-National Champion and certified USARS and RSA coach in freestyle, dance, and figures; she has more than eleven years of experience in teaching skaters of all skill levels, from beginners to accomplished skaters interested in competition. Roller Time instructors teach how to balance, skate forward and backward, fall and recover, toe stop and more. Campers will also strengthen their self-esteem, broaden their musical exposure, and improve gross motor skills. On Friday, parents are invited to attend the end of class as each student performs a routine. Please indicate each child's shoe size on their registration form. You will receive additional paperwork after this camp begins regarding theme days.
