Article I. Eligibility
Section 1. In order for a team to be eligible to participate in a specific sport, a representative MUST be present at the manager's meeting (see intramural calendar).
Section 2. All current students, faculty members and staff (full or part-time) of Furman University shall be eligible to enter any activity in the intramural sports program except as provided for later in this article.
Section 3. A team's legal roster will be the initial names on the entry forms and any names added to the roster prior to the first league game. However, the initial league roster must contain at least the required number of players to participate in that sport.
Section 4. An individual may only play on one team in each sport (in addition to 1 co-rec team). An individual may not play in both the champ and rec league for one sport. The first team that the individual plays for is considered their legal team.
Section 5. Sorority and fraternity Championship League Teams are limited to full dues paying members during the Fall semester. In the Spring semester, new members of sororities and fraternities may play in the Championship League once all Greek organizations have initiated their new pledge class.
Section 6. A student, who is a member of a varsity team cannot participate in that sport or its equivalent for that school year in the intramural sports program.
Section 7. A student, who practiced with a varsity team for ten days or more during the school year, cannot participate in that sport or its' equivalent for that school year in the intramural sports program unless approved by the Director of Campus Recreation.
Section 8. A student, who has an athletic scholarship, cannot participate in that sport or its equivalent for that school year in the intramural sports program.
Section 9. Any non-Greek organization wishing to compete for the All Sports trophy must submit a list of up to 50 upperclass members before September 10th to the Director of Recreational Sports. After all Greek organizations have initiated their new members, the team may add an additional 30 members.
Section 10. When a player incurs a wound that causes bleeding, the official must stop the game at the earliest possible time and make the player leave the game for treatment. If a player's uniform has blood on it, the official must stop the game at the earliest possible time and make the player leave the game to have the uniform cleaned and treated with an appropriate disinfectant or change the bloodied part of the uniform. The player must leave the game immediately upon notification from the official and will be allowed to return only after inspection by the official during the next play stoppage.
Section 11. Penalty: A team shall forfeit any contest in which it uses an ineligible player.
Article II. Protests
Section 1. All protests must be made in writing (or email) to the Director of Campus Recreation within 24 hours after the contest in question.
Section 2. Only protests concerning player eligibility and a supervisors' rule interpretation will be considered.
Section 3. All protests concerning rule interpretations must be made after the call in question to the supervisor, before the ball is put back into play, not after the game is over.
Section 4. Both sides of a protest will be presented to the Intramural Sports Council, if deemed necessary by the Director of Campus Recreation, with their vote final. A tie vote will favor the protesting team.
Section 5. During the playoffs, all protests must be in writing (or emailed) by 10:00 a.m. the following day. In the event an immediate decision cannot be rendered, all play-off games in that league will be postponed until a decision can be reached.
Article III. Point System

Sports: Volleyball, soccer, basketball, bowling, softball, sand volleyball, and indoor soccer.
Section 2. No points awarded for Co-Rec games.
Section 3. An organization which enters more than 1 team in the Championship League will only receive the points from the team that accumulates the most points. However, if any team of the organization forfeits a Championship League game, then the organizations team points will be based on the average of all their Championship League teams points.
Section 4. If a team forfeits a game, they will zero points towards the All-Sports trophy.
Article IV. Rescheduled Games
Section 1. Two teams desiring to postpone a contest for a legitimate reason must contact the Director of Two teams desiring to postpone a contest for a legitimate reason must contact the Director of Campus Recreation in person, the week prior to the scheduled contest. Both team managers must be present to agree on a future date to play the game before the originally scheduled game will be postponed. If no date is agreed upon, the game will be played at its original time. Games may not be rescheduled via email or telephone correspondence.
Section 2. Any game that is postponed from its' originally scheduled time and is not played, will result in a double forfeit for both teams, regardless of who originally postponed the game.
Article V. Forfeits
Section 1. Any team that fails to be ready for a contest at the scheduled time will forfeit to their opponent. If neither team is ready, both will be charged with a forfeit. To obtain a contest victory by forfeit, the required number of participants must be present and ready to play.
Section 2. Forfeited contests will not be rescheduled.
Section 3. If a team forfeits a contest, they will be dropped from the league.
Section 4. If a team forfeits out of 3 leagues during the year, the organization will be dropped from participation for 6 months (months served during fall and spring semester).
Article VI. Awards
Section 1. The Director of Campus Recreation will present the top men's and women's team in the Championship League Division with the All Sports Trophy (based on team points).
Section 2. The Director of Campus Recreation will present the top men's and women's Residence Hall teams in the Recreation League Division with the Major Sports Trophy (based on team points).
Section 3. The Intramural Sports Athlete of the Year (male and female) will be presented a plaque signifying their accomplishment.
Section 4. The Intramural Sports Athlete (male and female) exemplifying outstanding sportsmanship will be presented a plaque signifying their accomplishment.
Section 5. The Intramural Sports Athletic Chairperson demonstrating hard work and continued participation will be presented a plaque signifying their accomplishment.
Article VII. Playoffs
Section 1. All Class 1 team sports will have a single elimination tournament.
Section 2. The top 2 teams in each league will go to the playoffs. Exception: If there is only one league, there will be a single elimination tournament between half of the teams (and ties).
Section 3. Team record will determine tournament seeding. In case of a tie, the first tie-breaker will be head-to-head competition. The second tie-breaker will be the previous year's playoff results.
Section 4. The Director of Campus Recreation may select one wild card team per sport to participate in the playoffs.
Section 5. In the event of bad weather, and the regular season cannot be finished, all teams with a mathematical chance of making the playoffs will go to the playoffs (time permitting).
Section 6. If a team does not have a manager present at the manager's meeting (check registration form for meeting dates), the team will be ineligible for the playoffs. The team will be able to compete in the regular season.
Section 7. If a team registers after the manager's meeting, the team will be ineligible for the playoffs, but may compete in the regular season.
Article VIII. Conduct
Section 1. A team is responsible for the actions of individual members of the team and for spectators directly related to the team. Teams/organizations will be held responsible for their actions before, during and after every intramural sports contest. A team/organization may be immediately banned from the Intramural Sports program by the Director of Campus Recreation for conduct deemed inappropriate by any member of the Intramural Sports staff.
Section 2. If physical altercations do occur, the following guidelines will be used for disciplinary purposes:
- If a player, coach, or spectator participates in a fight, s/he will be ineligible for Intramural Sports competition for 30 intramural sports playing days. She/he will be brought up on charges to the University Discipline Committee.
- If more than one player, coach or spectator (from one team) participates in a fight, the entire organization will be eliminated from competition for 60 intramural sports playing days. Each individual will be brought up on charges to the University Discipline Committee.
- If a player, coach, or spectator verbally abuses a member of the Recreational Sports department, including student workers, she/he will be ineligible for Intramural Sports competition for 30 intramural sports playing days. She/he may be brought up on charges to the University Discipline Committee.
- If a player, coach or spectator accosts an official, these individuals will be permanently banned from all Intramural Sports activities. Further, the individual will be brought up on charges to the University Discipline Committee.
- Any player ejected from a game for unsportsmanlike conduct, including using profanity or making obscene gestures towards an official, opposing player or in anger, will be suspended from play for 10 intramural sports playing days.
- If an individual is deemed to be intentionally trying to harm a player, she/he will be permanently suspended from intramural sports play. This decision will be made by the Director of Campus Recreation, based on a report written by the game officials and intramural sports supervisor(s).
Section 3. An individual will not receive suspension credit for days on a study away program.
Section 4. Any individual, who has been drinking alcohol, and/or is playing in a manner that is endangering other intramural sports participants, will be removed from that game.
Section 5. All individuals will have a chance to appeal a decision to the Intramural Sports Council.
