Aikido

The Furman University Aikido Club strives to promote personal well-being and harmony in daily life for all its members through martial arts training, specifically Ki Development and Shinshin Toitsu Aikido as taught by Master Koichi Tohei 10th dan, Tochigi, Japan. The skills taught in Ki and Aikido are applicable to physical balance and centering, mental focus and calmness. Improving these aspects of one's life leads students to achieve their full potential in the classroom, at work, in athletics, the performing arts, and in daily life.
The Furman University Aikido Club seeks to provide the means by which students can benefit from learning the principles of mind and body coordination. These principles can be learned by men and women of all ages. From children to senior citizens, we encourage everyone to practice together in a safe, compassionate manner. While Aikido is a Japanese art and we wish to preserve its beautiful traditions, anyone, regardless of philosophical and religious persuasion, is always a very welcome member of our organization.
The Furman University Aikido Club is one of fourteen dojos associated with the Eastern Ki Federation, whose Chief Instructor is David Shaner Sensei, 7th dan. Shaner Sensei, who makes his home here in Greenville, SC, is a well-respected Ki and Aikido instructor and a personal student (former uchi deshi) of Tohei Sensei.
The Head Instructor of the Furman Universtiy Aikido Club is Eric Harrell, 5th dan, a personal and long time student of David Shaner Sensei.
The Eastern Ki Federation is an affiliate of the Ki Society International, which was founded by Master Koichi Tohei in 1974. The Ki Society International, which is based in Tochigi, Japan, has dojos on five continents and dozens throughout the United States.
Other Furman University Aikido Club Instructors include Russell McCulloch, Ileana Shaner, Mark Stone, Mike Gisman and Josh Queen.
