PRE-LAW cOURSE pLANNING

Furman does not offer a pre-law major. However, a legal education is all too often thought of as vocational training and practice.  As a student interested in the legal profession, you can select any major that best fits your interests and career goals. The American Law School Association has formulated guidelines to help students prepare for law school. These guidelines emphasize a well-rounded student who is an excellent critical thinker and communicator. Students are also expected to develop outstanding writing and argumentation skills. Furman’s interdisciplinary approach prepares you to meet these requirements.

You should discuss your career goals with both your assigned academic advisor the Pre-Law Advisor. They can help you make course selections that develop the skills outlined above. In specific pre-law related courses such as Judicial Process and Constitutional Law, students brief court cases and give in-class oral presentations. Debates and panel discussions also encourage students to interact and explore different viewpoints. Make sure to plan your course schedules to select classes which offer you these opportunities. Become a member of the Pre-Law Society to network with students who share your career interests.
