Furman boasts an award-winning and nationally ranked mock trial program that began in the Politics and International Affairs department but is open to all students. Our teams compete in prestigious tournaments around the country each year, alternating between civil and criminal legal cases. Our coaching staff includes local lawyers and actors and offers students a multitude of networking opportunities in Greenville and the Carolinas. For high school students, we also offer a basic mock trial camp that requires no experience as well as Top Mock, for the twelve best high school mock trial students in the U.S. Both offerings are one-week programs and take place in July.
For students interested in improving their public speaking skills, polishing critical and analytical faculties, and learning peacekeeping skills, the mock mediation project is an extraordinary opportunity. The goal of the project is to understand why conflict exists and to resolve it in a positive, peaceful fashion. Students in the project train elementary and middle school peer mediators and are available to resolve disputes on campus.
