At Furman, the study of political science provides a first-rate academic experience and a curriculum that emphasizes a complete education in all facets of the discipline. Political science is a discipline that encourages you to think deeply about the world, from Washington to Beijing, Baghdad to Sao Paolo. Our students encounter everything from philosophic treatises to survey data in their quest to understand to role of governance in society. Students are also given opportunities to experience politics in a personal way, through internships or study away programs.

Steps to declaring a political science major

  • Choose an advisor from among the faculty members in the department
  • Meet with that advisor to discuss course selection and program options
  • Fill out the "Declaration of a New Major" form with your advisor
  • Turn the form in to department assistants Lori Schoen or Paige Blankenship and have your photo taken for our majors display board

Requirements for a political science major

A major in political science must include:

  • PSC-101, 102, 103, 150,
  • at least one advanced course in two 
of the four designated sub-fields: American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Political Thought,
  • one engaged learning course or four credits offered during the May Experience through the department, and
  • two additional advanced courses in political science.

If you plan to major in political science, you should consult with the chair or a faculty advisor in the department to select specific courses suited to your individual interests and needs.
