Established in 2008, the Tocqueville Program encourages students to examine the moral questions at the heart of political life. The program sponsors a popular student seminar in political thought, and brings some of the nation's most prominent scholars and intellectuals to campus for public lectures. The program encourages students to become more thoughtful citizens and dignified human beings.
The program takes its name from Alexis de Tocqueville, the French writer and statesman who visited America in the 1830s to study and write about the young nation’s experiment with democracy.
