The Young Artist Vocal Experience is an intensive one-week workshop for talented solo singers and choristers ages 14-18 who perform song literature, oratorio, opera, and traditional musical theatre. Participants have the opportunity to develop their skills through voice classes, master classes, student recitals, and special topic sessions. Private lessons with the Furman voice faculty are available for an additional fee. Participants will be selected based upon application information and recommendation of their private voice teacher or choir director.

  • Private lessons: $35 per half hour session (limit of 4)

Full payment is expected at time of registration. Discounts are available to applicants who earned regional NATS placement or All-State choral ensemble placement, have a sibling attending the institute or are the child of a Furman employee. 

RECOMMENDATIONS: An email to Dr. Knox from your teacher/director will be fine. A formal note on letterhead is not expected.  grant.knox@furman.edu

Come prepared to perform

Students should bring two performance-ready works for master class / recital and 3-4 additional works (not yet performance ready) for further study during the week. Master class performance is encouraged but not required.  Everyone performs on the closing recital.  More details will be available in your confirmation packet.

Roommates: Housing is carefully assigned by age and musical interest based on information the students give us later in the spring.  Yes, students may request to room with a friend/sibling. Those requests are made later, on the Housing Form distributed in April. In order to be placed together, BOTH students must request each other on the form and submit the form before the specified deadline.

Meals are served in our main dining hall. The DH features a variety of diet options, including a salad bar, four serving lines, a wood-fire pizza oven and a dessert bar. All meals (Sunday dinner through Friday lunch) are included in the boarding student fee. Commuters eat lunch and dinner with the boarding students - those meals are included in your camp fee.

Students who drive to camp will be provided with a parking permit. Commuters may park in the free lot next to the music building. Boarding students are not permitted to leave campus or use their cars during the camp week. 

Supervision:  Yes! The Director, counselors, faculty and adult staff supervise all activities. Counselors are Furman music majors/alumni. Campus accessibility is detailed based on time of day. Music camp students are not permitted beyond designated campus areas. Curfews are specified daily and strictly enforced. Behavioral guidelines will be detailed and sent to parents in advance of camp. Security is provided by the Furman University Police Department and local law enforcement.
