That's the great thing about Furman. You get opportunities as soon as you get here. Life as a Music Major Why Furman? I was deciding between Furman and a conservatory. What appealed to me about Furman is the liberal arts aspect of the education that you get here. I liked the idea of getting a well-rounded undergraduate education. Favorite class: I loved my First Year Seminar: Finding Your Life Purpose. It's interesting to see what drives other people and how they look at life. Favorite professor: Dr. Trudy Hines Fuller. Dr. Fuller is my voice coach, and she has a way of communicating ideas that get through to me. She really helps me grow as a student. Career goals: I want to become part of an opera company after graduate school and go from there. I'd like to perform, but if that doesn't work out, I hope to teach. Best of List Best study location: I like studying in my dorm and in the parlors at Lakeside housing. Favorite activity: Going downtown. That's where you can find the most to do and it's just a really pretty part of Greenville. Best thing about Greenville: You can find everything you need within a 15 to 30 minute radius. There's rural and city life. If you go to Cherrydale or Greenville, you can find shopping and food. But if you visit Traveler's Rest, you'll find a much smaller and simpler town. It's nice to have access to both. Favorite Furman tradition: The freshman serenade. When students first get to Furman as freshman, the guys sing to the girls while the girls throw candy at them.< /ul> Helpful Tips Choosing a major: I was in a rare position where I knew what I was going to do in college. It's just about finding your niche, going with it, and pursuing it to the best of your ability. If you're not interested in something, then why pursue it? Studying: It's time consuming, but for a vocabulary or a language test, it's helpful to just write everything out and get organized. Getting involved on campus: During orientation, there are a lot of student activities and events to help you get involved. Just be open and willing to meet new people. Talk to the different organizations on campus. Go to different meetings even if it's something you never thought you'd go to. Making friends: Be open minded to new perspectives and don't be afraid to go up to people. Just start a conversation. Living on campus: Be very flexible with your roommate and with others living in your dorm. Just be very accepting of other people's lifestyles.
