Music Theory Furman University

Furman's Bachelor of Music in Music Theory provides an opportunity to engage in the creation, analysis, and formulation of music. You'll complete a series of courses designed to develop your overall musicianship and your understanding of the intricacies and beauty that comprise the language of music. Furman students intending to major in music must perform an audition and complete a music theory placement examination. Final approval for a music degree takes place during your sophomore year

  • MUS 111 (4 hrs.) Basic Musicianship I (Fall Semester, Freshman year)
  • MUS 112 (4 hrs.) Basic Musicianship II (Spring Semester, Freshman year)
  • MUS 120  Introduction to Music Literature
  • MUS 211 (4 hrs.) Basic Musicianship III (Fall Semester, Sophomore year)
  • MUS 212 (4 hrs.) Basic Musicianship IV (Spring Semester, Sophomore year)
  • MUS-220 World Music I
  • MUS-221 Music History I
  • MUS-320 Music History II
  • MUS-321 Music History III
  • MUS-352 Basic Conducting
  • Two credits of performance topics
  • Recital Attendance for seven semesters (MUS-050)
  • Freshman Music Colloquium for one semester (MUS-051)
  • Membership in at least one ensemble: Symphony orchestra (MUS-060), Furman band (MUS-061), Furman Singers (MUS-062), Furman men's chorale (MUS-063), Furman women's chorale (MUS-064), or Guitar Ensemble (MUS-076)
