I love performing with our marching band—the Paladin Regiment. Our halftime shows are enjoyable because we dance at least once in every show. Life as a Music Major Why Furman? I was introduced to Furman in eighth grade because the South Carolina All-State Clinic was held here. I came here every March and fell in love with the campus. As I was researching colleges in high school, I realized I liked the look and feel of Furman. I also really admired the flute professor, so it seemed like a perfect fit. Favorite class: General linguistics. If I weren't a music major, I would try to do something with linguistics. I love breaking down a language to its smallest form and building it up again. Favorite professor: My flute professor: Cynthia Hopkins. I knew her before I came to Furman and she's a wonderful teacher and performer. She really cares about her students and she's there for us whenever we need her. Study away experience: I went on a May Experience class called "Impressionism in France." It wasn't focused solely on music making, but I got to take a lesson with a flutist from the Paris Conservatory. Best of List Favorite activity: Hanging out with my friends. They're a wonderful group of people and spending time with them is always a lot of fun. Best thing about Greenville: The atmosphere. I don't know if you'd call it quaint because it's not necessarily a small town, but it feels cozy. You feel at home here. Favorite place to eat: Coffee Underground. The food is delicious and you can go there late at night. They also have a stage area. They'll often have live music and plays. Helpful Tips Choosing a major: Find your passion. The struggle to understand a concept or learn something is easier when you love what you're doing. Studying: Turn off all forms of social media and don't even let yourself go near Facebook or Tumblr. Living on campus: A lot of people struggle with having a roommate for the first time. Don't be afraid to be open up and be honest about conflicts and different living styles. Just talk it out because it makes everything a lot less stressful.
