One of my favorite experiences at Furman is attending football games. I'm in the Paladin Regiment Marching Band, and it's awesome to be on the field as Sir Paladin rides while we're playing. Life as a Music Major Why Furman? As a trombonist, I knew the southeast had some of the best wind programs and I just clicked with Furman. When I came for audition weekend, I had a big, dumb smile on my face while I was showing my dad the campus. That's when I knew I wanted to come here. Why did you decide to become a music major? I can't see myself doing anything else. There's never been anything I liked as much as music or felt more comfortable doing. Best experience in the department I went to Chicago with the wind ensemble and played on Chicago Symphony Center stage. It was intimidating, but amazing. Favorite professor My trombone professor, Dr. Mark Britt. He's so relaxed about everything in such a high-pressure department. He just wants us to play and do what we love. Career goals I want to teach band, but I'm still deciding whether I want to teach at a middle school, high school, or university. Best of List Best study location The courtyard of our music building. I like to study on my own, so I prefer a place with fewer distractions. Favorite activity My roommate is a black belt in martial arts. I enjoy going to the gym and practicing with him. Best thing about Greenville The options. You can go to the park, get ice cream, or eat at great restaurants. Best campus dining spot Moe's Southwest Grill. You can find it in the Trone Student Center. It's a lot of food and not a lot of money. Usually, I can save some for later. Helpful Tips Choosing a major Try everything, and see what really speaks to you. High school doesn't always give you that opportunity. Use your general education requirements as a chance to immerse yourself in a new subject. Studying Don't sacrifice sleep for studying. You won't retain anything unless you sleep. Getting involved on campus Ask other students what's fun. Your resident advisors and your first-year advisors will tell you plenty of things to do during your freshman year. Talk to your older friends because you'll make plenty. Making friends Talk to people and see what they're interested in. No one wants to be on their own in college, so it's easy to make friends. Living on campus Don't bring your whole life. It won't fit in the room.
