Brass, Woodwind and Percussion members are selected and seated based on the concert band auditions - see excerpts below.  Instrumentation is determined by repertoire. Harp and piano positions are selected by the respective teachers in consultation with Dr. Joiner.

MARCHING BAND  APPLICATION
No audition required. Marching band members arrive early for pre-season camp. Read more: Paladin Regiment Marching Band.

SYMPHONIC WINDS *APPLICATION
Audition excerpts required. If you would like to be considered for membership in the fall concert band (Symphonic Winds) or the Furman Symphony Orchestra, see instructions and required *excerpts.

1. This audition is open to all Furman Students.
2. This audition is required for all wind and percussion scholarship students.
3. This audition is required for all intended or declared music majors.

Your audition will consist of the *excerpts posted below and a brief sight-reading passage. No Scales!

A double bass player and pianist will also be selected based on faculty recommendation and student interest.

Sign-up sheets will be posted in August. The audition will take place behind a screen.  Dr. Hicken and members of the Wind and Percussion Faculty will adjudicate. Symphonic Winds personnel will be established for the fall term based upon the results of this audition.This audition is not to be confused with the brief audition that takes place for freshman during Band Camp.

Personnel Decisions will be based upon the following criteria:
  >The results of the audition.
  >Your past experience and performance in the ensemble program.
  >The educational value for you as an individual.
  >Your availability (academic schedule.)


  >Instrumentation requirements for each concert.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE  *APPLICATION

Audition excerpts required. Prior improvisation experience NOT required! Our jazz auditions are designed to be a low-key way for us to accurately assess your experience level as a jazz musician. Even if LITTLE or NO experience in jazz, please feel free to apply/audition. We will do our very best to include everyone we can in our program!

Choral Ensembles

CHORAL APPLICATION
All students wishing to sing in a choral ensemble must audition, but, no excerpts are required! Your audition is primarily vocalization to determine range and tone. A sign-up sheet will be posted outside Daniel Music studio 111. Complete the app above to receive more info.

  • Sunday or Monday, August 20 and 21, from 7-9pm -or-
  • Tuesday August 22 from 3:30-6pm
You will be placed in the Singers or Chorale based on your audition, prior experience and voice part. Instrumentalists fulfilling their music education choral requirement should also audition in the fall.
