I work primarily on transatlantic visions of the French New World in the eighteenth century with secondary interests in Enlightenment writers and Québécois identity issues. I have published or presented on subjects as disparate as transvestism in the eighteenth-century to the video game Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. After two years as an Assistant Professor at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA, I am excited to be back at Furman. I look forward to utilizing the resources at the new Modern Language Center and French house to create compelling opportunities for student learning inside and outside the classroom. ​


In my classroom I strive to display my passion for the subject matter and to connect the material to the larger world. I see myself as a guide to help students develop deep reasoning skills and a personal engagement with learning. Moreover, I employ technology in the classroom - such as iMovie - to help students improve their "real world" skills. My teaching style respects the diversity of the classroom and of the French-speaking world through different learning activities and pedagogical approaches. ​

Designed to prepare students with some background in French for the first intermediate level course. One semester equivalent of the elementary sequence.

Continuation of the skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) developed in French 111, with increased emphasis on vocabulary expansion, idiomatic expression, and cultural differences. 4 credits.

French Conversation

Intense oral practice focusing on practical daily use as well as discourse on Francophone cultures and events with an emphasis on current, everyday speech. A variety of sources are used to develop listening and communication skills; improve fluency in speaking French; build vocabulary; and familiarize students with appropriate linguistic register. An introduction to French phonetics is included.

Frn Lit of the Enlightenment

Introduction to the literature of the eighteenth century (1715-89), including essay, theater and prose fiction. Works by authors such as Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau, Montesquieu, Beaumarchais and Laclos.

Investigation of the Franco-American alliance and representations from Lafayette to Freedom Fries. Study of hot-button issues from American and French perspectives in an effort to understand the French and ourselves better.
