Class of 2014
I was surprised by how accessible the professors are to you. They are invested in your success.
Life as a Mathematics Major
- Why did you decide to come to Furman?
I received a scholarship, but I was also drawn to the beautiful campus and strong academics. My mom also teaches here so I grew up knowing about Furman. I wanted to come here for a long time.
- Favorite class:
I enjoyed probability because of the professor and because of how it integrated topics from other classes. I also really liked operations research because it applies to real world problems.
- Favorite professors:
Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hutson. They're both helpful outside of class and want you to have a deep understanding of what you're learning. They really challenge you.
- Career goals:
I'm applying to graduate school, primarily Ph.D. programs. I'd like to teach at a university, or work in an industry focused on optimization analytics.
Best of List
- Best study location:
- Best thing about Greenville:
It's big enough that there's everything you need but it's not so big that getting places is difficult. There's plenty to do, but it's not overwhelming.
- Biggest challenge:
- Favorite place to eat:
- Best campus dining spot:
Work ahead so that if you're having trouble with concept, you have time to seek help from a professor. In the math department, the professors are extremely helpful. But if you wait until the night before your test, you won't be able to connect with them.
- Getting involved on campus:
If you're interested in something, there's probably a group for it. If not, you can start your own club. Be open about trying new things, but at the same time, realize that you can't do everything.
- Making friends:
Meet as many people as you can in your freshman hall. There are seniors who are still good friends with the people they met on their hall as freshman. Another option to is meet people in your classes, especially the small ones. It's good to find a close knit group who you can study with.
- What isn't in the brochure:
- Living on campus:
I love living on campus. I had the option to commute from home, but I feel more connected to the Furman community by living here.
