Dr. Shaniece Criss is an Assistant Professor of Health Science at Furman University and an experienced researcher and evaluator. Her research focuses on promoting health equity through health communication and policy. Currently, she is partnering with Furman’s Institute for the Advancement of Community Health (IACH) as an academic lead on projects with Greenville Health System (GHS) and LiveWell Greenville. She is also a Fellow of the Riley Institute’s Diversity Leaders Initiative (Class XXIII) and a Shi Center for Sustainability Faculty Affiliate at Furman.

As a public health practitioner, Dr. Criss served as producer and host for a national, television show for the Ministry of Health in Guyana, South America during her Peace Corps service. She also held positions at ICF International, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Cable News Network (CNN). Dr. Criss earned her Doctor of Science degree from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She was a Presidential Public Service Fellow, selected as a Political Campaign Trainee, and earned her Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She obtained her Master of Public Health from Emory University, and a Bachelor of Arts in communication with a focus in urban leadership from Oglethorpe University.

As a Greenville native, she is committed to community involvement in the health, business, and political sectors. Currently, Dr. Criss serves on the Human Relations Commission after being appointed by the Greenville County Council, and she is a board member of South Carolina’s YMCA Youth in Government and Teen Achievers program.​

Wellness concepts which promote lifetime fitness and healthy lifestyle habits. Topics include: aerobic and muscular conditioning, nutrition, and medical aspects of fitness. Participation in activities to develop cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.

Fundamentals of Public Health

An introduction to the academic discipline of public health, including the sub-disciplines of health care systems and disease epidemiology. Emphasis on the theory, planning, implementation and evaluation process for public health interventions.

Dr. Criss aims to integrate the fields of social epidemiology, behavioral sciences, and health communication to influence public policy and create interventions to improve population health. Specific topics include: health equity, social determinants of health, media effects on health, health policy, obesity, tobacco, and adolescent health.
