Dr. Anna Cass is an Assistant Professor in the Health Sciences Department at Furman University. Prior to joining the Furman faculty in 2016, she worked in clinical research for 10 years at the Greenville Health System. She was one of the founding faculty members at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (USCSOMG), where she taught epidemiology, biostatistics, and research methods to medical students.

Dr. Cass began her graduate work at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health where she earned a Master of Public Health with concentrations in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Her research in Kentucky focused on population-based cancer studies. During her doctoral work in epidemiology at the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health, she worked on a study of ADHD in youth and a faith-based health promotion program for adults.

Dr. Cass is glad to be back at her alma mater, teaching in the department where she studied as an undergraduate student. She is a native of Franklin, TN, but is enjoying putting down roots in Greenville, SC with her husband, Jeremy, and three children, Addy, Charlie, and Oliver.​​

Wellness Concepts

Wellness concepts which promote lifetime fitness and healthy lifestyle habits. Topics include: aerobic and muscular conditioning, nutrition, and medical aspects of fitness. Participation in activities to develop cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.

HSC-201

Research & Evaluation in HSC

Principles of research relevant to health and exercise science focusing on study design, measurement, and statistical techniques used in the analysis and interpretation of data from population based and human performance studies. Statistical software functions and communication techniques are included. It is recommended that this course be enrolled early in the major.

HSC-205

Fundamentals of Public Health

An introduction to the academic discipline of public health, including the sub-disciplines of health care systems and disease epidemiology. Emphasis on the theory, planning, implementation and evaluation process for public health interventions.

HSC-401

Epidemiology

An introduction to epidemiologic concepts and methods used to evaluate the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations. Emphasis on basic principles of epidemiology, measures in epidemiology, and epidemiologic study designs and analysis. Other topics that are important to an introductory understanding of epidemiology including outbreak investigations, screening, and the role of epidemiology in public health will also be included. Laboratories will focus on the calculation and application of basic epidemiology measures of disease frequency, comparison, and impact.

Dr. Cass has studied predictors of health outcomes in clinical populations across numerous clinical practice areas, including surgery, developmental-behavioral pediatrics, and infection prevention. Her Ph.D. research, conducted at the Greenville Health System, compared methods of identifying and measuring healthcare-associated infections. She is currently investigating how educational interventions impact knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of care providers and patients in populations who have experienced health and healthcare disparities.​
