The department chair will determine, in coordination with the Assistant Dean of Study Away and International Education
, what programs the department will offer the following academic year and determine who will direct each program. The chair may need to coordinate with other department chairs on staffing and scheduling the programs if more than one department is involved in directing the program. The chairs will need to assess the compatibility of faculty members directing the program and make sure the course offerings are sound and well balanced. The deadline for submitting new program proposals to the SAIE Office is October 1. For programs that are offered on a regular basis, the chair should ideally develop a three year rotation for directing the program.
The chair should consult regularly with the Study Away program directors on the proposed budget, logistics, recruitment, and planning for emergency contingencies. The program director, chair, and Dean of SAIE should be in regular communication. The chair should assist in promoting the study away programs and advise on recruiting strategies. If your department is in charge of student selection for a study away program, ensure that the process is clear and transparent.
The chair should ensure that program directors administer course evaluations and program evaluations to all participants and should file these reports upon completion of the program.
