Brian Bratton (2005) is a wide receiver for the 2009 Grey Cup Champion Montreal Alouettes.  He was a four-year starter for the Furman Paladins.  During the off-season, Brian works to support the Lead Academy, a charter school for at-risk children in Greenville.

"What I learned during my time in Com Studies has proven to be a very valuable asset to me. With my profession and numerous activities in front of the public and media, I heavily lean on what I learned in my com courses. This has helped me to not only communicate my feelings and views, but also project who I am as a person.”
Anderson Reid Gormly, a 2004 Communications Studies Graduate from Furman, is actively pursuing a career in Film and Television in Hollywood, and can soon be seen co-starring on the FOX hit drama HOUSE, M.D. (April 19).  He likes to think of his time since Furman as spent getting his Master's in Acting from a variety of teachers in Los Angeles.  He is currently working with internationally renown coach, Ivana Chubbuck, whose first big claim to fame was Halle Berry and Monster's Ball.  He has had the privilege to perform in such stage classics as WEST SIDE STORY, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, and the absurd comedy, BEYOND THERAPY.

In addition to performing, he has also been working toward bringing substantial, thought-provoking material back to the stage and screen.  He is currently writing and developing a dramatic television pilot sending seven Harvard Grads on a prophetic journey across the Globe to find a cure for Humanity.  In keeping with his major, and some great teaching from his advisor, Dr. Letteri, the idea grew out of a desire to inspire our culture to return to the coffeehouses and salons that time and technology have forced us away from, in order to dialogue about issues on every front from religion to politics to science.  The project is currently in the hands of some execs at FOX and NBC- more details to follow.

Other projects in the works are a self-written stage play about revenge entitled, JAWBONE HILL, and potential performances in the plays, SIDE MAN and AMADEUS.

You can follow his work on his personal blog, a published blog at, as well as the soon to be revamped performance site:

Karly Schledwitz (2009) is a press assistant for the Committee on Science and Technology for the U.S. House of Representatives. In her senior year, she received the Communication Studies Award for Excellence in Public Speaking & Debate.

“At Furman, I was a double major in Communication Studies and Political Science. Obviously, my love for politics is what brought me to the poli-sci major and eventually to Washington, DC. But my Com Studies classes provided me with invaluable tools that I have used in the workplace- from writing press releases, to understanding copyright law and even some persuasive speaking techniques! My job as a press assistant on Capitol Hill is a perfect application of my blended political science-communication degree.”
Jodi Tovay (2005) is a marketing specialist at the Discovery Channel in New York City.  At Furman she was President of the Furman University Students Activities Board and she was student speaker at the 2005 Commencement.

“Graduating with a Communication Studies degree provided me with the ethical foundation that all people who work in media have the responsibility to know and exercise.”
