Major Requirements Communication Studies Furman University

To graduate with a major in communication studies, you're required to successfully complete a minimum of nine courses, including:

  • COM-101, 121, 201, and 221,
  • at least three additional communication studies courses numbered between 300 and 499, and
  • two more communication studies courses.

Only one course involving individualized instruction (independent study, research, or internships numbered between 501 and 509) may contribute to major requirements, and no more than two courses, eight credits, completed away from Furman may contribute to major requirements.

Additionally, Communication Studies majors must have at least a 2.00 grade point average in all courses that satisfy major requirements.

Admission to the major is approved on a rolling basis. You must have completed no less than 32 and typically no more than
 64 credits and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 at the time of application. We encourage you to visit the department chair to discuss your admission to the major.
