Our business and accounting program is recognized as one of the most
comprehensive among liberal arts colleges. You don't just learn how a business functions, or crunch numbers. As a major in our department, you learn how to communicate, work in teams, and make effective business decisions. You also learn how to lead.
With degree programs in business administration and accounting, our curriculum ensures your career will never be restricted to one area. Sure, if you're interested in becoming a certified public accountant, you can focus on accounting. But at Furman, you'll also gain a working knowledge of finance, marketing and operations by enrolling in our Business
Core Block. This program will ensure that you have the analytical and strategic skills necessary to succeed in any environment.
Founded on the central principles of the liberal arts, our programs also
allow you to pursue your wide-ranging interests and ideas—and
still receive a comprehensive business education. You’ll explore
how business and accounting are connected to other disciplines, and see things from
multiple perspectives. And by the time you graduate, we’ll transform you
into a first-rate problem solver, one who thinks deeply and develops
creative solutions to complex problems.
Whether you're interested in pursuing a position with a Fortune 500 company or starting your own business, our programs will prepare you for a career in the global marketplace. We offer the bachelor of arts with majors in both accounting and business administration. Both programs blend a signature approach to the liberal arts with a comprehensive business core. That helps us develop well-rounded graduates who can approach complex issues from multiple angles—a real asset in the business world.
As a major in our department, you'll benefit from a curriculum that relies on experiential exercises and integrated projects to help you understand the core principles of business management. Our programs offer our students numerous opportunities to work together on projects, such as helping underprivileged members of the Greenville community prepare their taxes.
Upon acceptance into the business major, you'll enroll in our Business Core Block, a set of courses that are similar to what you'd find in an MBA program. These courses emphasize four functional areas: accounting, finance, marketing and operations. By gaining insight into each of these key areas of study, you'll be prepared for a meaningful and lucrative career. Best of all, you’ll take these upper-division courses with a small cohort of students. That means you'll have an opportunity to develop enduring relationships that will pay dividends in your professional career.
Six out of 10 Furman graduates are working in some business-related field, including marketing, accounting, finance and public relations. That's because a liberal arts degree is in high demand no matter what you do in the
work force. In addition to enhancing your technical skills, you’ll leave
Furman knowing how to think critically, how to learn, how to see things
from multiple perspectives and how to evaluate and create. These are
skills that can be applied to any career and it’s part of the reason our
graduates are so successful. If you're interested in pursuing a graduate degree, our alumni have been accepted to the top graduate-level and MBA programs in the nation.
With our ideal student-to-faculty ratio, you'll work and collaborate with professors who know your name. Our faculty members will help you understand the most difficult concepts, and even help you build a business skills portfolio before you graduate. Meet our faculty.
