Each summer, we take a group of incoming freshmen on the experience of a lifetime. All selected participants are fully funded by Furman. We travel throughout China, learning about the country's culture, history, and language. Not only will you get to see and learn about China, you'll also get to know your new classmates and professors. By the time you get back to campus, you'll already have a network of friends.
There will be no Summer China Experience 2016, but there will be Summer China Environmental Experience as a May Experience course for those who have finished one year of Chinese (Information forthcoming).
Each year, we'll spend the first half of the trip in Suzhou at Soochow University. Located on the Yangtze River, the area is full of lakes and ponds, which gives it the nickname "Venice of China." You'll spend your time in Suzhou visiting cultural and historic sites, eating regional cuisine, and attending seminars with Chinese students from Soochow University.
The second half of the trip changes each year. In the past, we've gone to Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Chongging. One of the Furman professors on the trip will be an expert on China and fluent in Mandarin. Between your professors and the local tour guides, you'll get a crash course in Chinese history and culture.
While we're in Suzhou, you'll stay in a dorm room at Soochow University with a Chinese roommate. But when we're traveling, you'll stay at hotels with your classmates and professors. You'll also get the chance to sample authentic Chinese food at local hotels and restaurants.
Your travel-related expenses are free for the summer program. However, to attend, you must commit to two semesters of Chinese language courses and enroll in a first-year writing seminar upon returning from China.
