The Religion Department does not sponsor any religious organization for students but regularly partners with these groups, the Chaplain’s office, and the Cothran Center to do programing and to provide our students with internships and other formative opportunities. We also participate in a number of academic minors and encourage our students to explore these opportunities.

Religious Programing

Chaplains’ Office
Dr. Vaughn CroweTipton, University Chaplain, is a member of the Religion Department and regularly teaches courses in the area of his Ph.D. studies, New Testament. The Chaplains and Religion faculty co-sponsor lectureships and programs like the World Religions Series.

Religious Organizations
Furman has a number of religious organizations representing a wide variety of faith groups. Several department members serve as faculty advisors for one of these groups, and everyone in the department enjoys participating in their programing.

Exploration of Vocation of Ministry
A number of students involved in the EVM program are also Religion majors. Our majors who are interested in ministry of any kind are encouraged to explore this program’s opportunities and scholarship possibilities.

Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection
A number of current Religion Majors began their Furman journey in the Cothran Center’s Summer Reflections Programs in which Religion Faculty regularly teach. And former Religion majors return to serve as leaders in that program as well. Other events sponsored by the Cothran Center are also important to both students and faculty in our department.
