Congratulations on your decision to attend Furman! To confirm your spot at our university, please complete the following steps by the appropriate deadline:

Required steps

  • Reserve a place in the class of 2020:

      Take the first step to enrolling at Furman. Submit our Statement of Intent form along with a $500 deposit. By signing this statement and paying the deposit, you are making a commitment to enroll at Furman. The deposit will be refunded, less any fees owed to the university, once you have graduated. Sign the form and pay the deposit electronically, or you may send a check and printed form to:

  • Take the new student survey:

      To assist our matching you with an outstanding academic advisor, take a moment to tell us about yourself by completing the New Student Survey. In order to access the survey, you will need to use your Furman ID number and IT credentials, which you will be receiving in the mail. The survey will be available in May.

  • Apply for housing:
  • Register for Summer Orientation:

      Furman offers a hybrid approach to acclimating students to academics and college life—Summer Orientation and Fall Orientation. We encourage our students to attend both sessions. Summer Orientation is a two-day program that offers new students and their families an opportunity to learn about our academics, meet with academic advisors to discuss fall course options, and conduct important placement activities. The Summer Orientation registration deadline is Friday, May 27. After May 27, no session changes or refunds can be made.  Learn how to register for Summer Orientation.

  • Complete our technology orientation:

      Learn about the technology resources available at Furman and get your computer ready to access the campus network by completing our technology orientation. Your account information will be mailed to you mid-May. 

  • Take our online language placement test:

      At Furman, you're required to complete a foreign language sequence. If you have studied French, German or Spanish before, speak one of these languages at home, or have lived for an extended period in a country where one of these languages is spoken, take our online language placement test. If you've studied Latin in the past, be sure to complete our test specifically designed for that language. Placement exams for other languages, such as Chinese or Japanese, may be completed during fall orientation. Remember there is no need to take a placement test in a language you have not studied before or don't speak at home. Placement tests should be completed prior to attending Summer Orientation. The language placement test password is included with the other account information mailed to you from Furman Information Technology Services.   • Consider your First Year Writing Seminar:

      All new students are required to complete a First Year Writing Seminar (FYW) in their first year at Furman.  First year writing seminars expose you to the expectations of college-level writing, but they also pose challenging intellectual issues and engage you in thoughtful discussions with your classmates.  Each seminar is attached to one or more interdisciplinary categories and is limited to no more than 12 students to personalize your learning experience.

      Before attending Summer Orientation: Familiarize yourself with the interdisciplinary categories in which the first year seminars are grouped.

      During Summer Orientation: When you meet with a Summer Advisor, you will discuss your academic interests and rank in order three of these interdisciplinary categories that most interest you.  These rankings will be used to assign you to an individual seminar that will fit into your initial course schedule.

  • Submit a photo for your ID:

      Send us a photograph suitable for your Furman ID card and we will have it ready for you when you arrive in the fall. The deadline to submit your photo is June 30. 

  • Submit your final high school transcript:

      Don't forget to send your final high school transcript to us. Forms should be mailed to:

  • Submit your test scores:

      Hoping to replace an introductory course with your Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) test score? Find out if you scored high enough to earn credit.

      If you did not designate Furman as your score recipient when you took the AP exam, be sure to arrange for your scores to be sent directly to us. Find out how at www.collegeboard.com. Be aware that the College Board charges a fee for this service. The College Board code for Furman University is 5222.

      To send us your IB scores, you can request score reports through e-mail at transcripts.ibna@ibo.org. Learn more at www.ibo.org.

  • Register your vehicle:

      The Furman University Police Department oversees the vehicle registration process. Please visit the Parking Information website to register your car, request a parking pass, and familiarize yourself with Furman's parking policies. 

  • Enroll in paperless billing:
  • Submit your medical/immunizations records:

      Be sure to complete our Furman Student Health Services records process. Log into the Furman Patient Portal and follow the detailed instructions for required immunizations, health history forms, and insurance information. The due date for medical records is June 15. If your medical and immunization records are not received by June 15, you will not receive a housing assignment or fall course schedule until you are compliant.

  • Make your first tuition payment:

  • Complete the alcohol, drug, and sexual assault education program:

      We have joined a number of the nation's top schools in offering AlcoholEdu for College and Haven as a component of our alcohol and sexual assault prevention initiative. Whether you abstain from alcohol or not, this program will help you make well-informed decisions about alcohol. You will receive an email later this summer with further instructions on how to complete this.

  • Review the student handbook:
  • Review your financial aid awards:

      Be sure to review your financial aid so that you understand what is offered and what you will owe upon graduation. You can view your award package by clicking "MyFurman: Accept/Reject Financial Aid Award" in the navigation menu of our financial aid site.

  • Attend Fall Orientation (August 19-22):

      Furman offers a hybrid approach to acclimating students to academics and college life—Summer Orientation and Fall Orientation. Our students are required to attend Fall Orientation. Learn more about Fall Orientation.

  • Register for Summer China Experience:

      Explore one of the world's most dynamic regions during a two-week journey with our faculty. Consider this trip if you are interested in taking courses in our Asian Studies department. More information about this opportunity and how to apply will be coming soon!

  • Register for Japan Summer Experience:

      Interested in Asian Studies? Take a two-week jour​ney with our faculty to Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo. More information about this opportunity and how to apply will be coming soon!

  • Register for Summer Connections:

      Apply to be a Summer Connections Scholar! Spend a week on campus exploring vocation through personal reflection, creative expression, faith, and service-learning in the community, all while having fun in the process! Space is limited, so don't wait to apply! The priority deadline is May 15.

  • Submit housing requests due to disability needs:

      If you have a disability or medical condition that requires some type of accommodation in housing, be sure to submit your request.

  • Request for Student Office for Accessibility Resources (SOAR) accommodations:

      Along with that documentation, be sure to complete our Initial Contact Form. Review of these documents may take three to four weeks. Once your information (both documentation and the Initial Contact Form) has been received, you will be contacted to arrange a telephone intake interview to discuss accommodations. Information may be sent at any time, but needs to be received by June 30 to ensure accommodations are in place by the start of the fall semester.
