  • The Teaching Fellowship program offers the opportunity for teaching fellows to work with Furman faculty throughout the academic year.  It is designed to promote effective teaching and learning through innovative course design, development, and delivery and to give Teaching Fellows substantive experiences through their involvement in these activities. Each $450 fellowship assumes four to five hours of activity per week during fall or spring term. A very limited number of $1500 awards will be made for summer 2017 for more concentrated project work (eight to ten weeks of half-time activity, or four to five weeks of full-time activity), but not to support summer session courses.

  • Application Deadlines:

    • Summer:  March 24 (for course development, not for supporting summer session classes)
    • Fall:  April 17
    • Spring:  October 9 (though you are encouraged to submit by April 17)

At Furman, Engaged Learning has been a long-time guiding principle, driving our work both in and beyond the classroom. We operate both our Undergraduate Research and Internship programs in one office as part of Academic Affairs. This helps us maintain close connections between students and faculty and the community.

From collaborative research with faculty on their own knowledge-producing work to internships in the Greenville community and around the globe, Furman students have wonderful opportunities to explore their passions and interests, developing their skills far beyond their excellent classroom experiences. The URI office can help students connect with faculty and employer mentors. And we encourage students to reflect on their research and internship experiences as they contemplate the intersection between their passions, skills, and experiences.

Furman offers class credit opportunities for internships and research in many departments. Many students also pursue full-time Research and Internship projects during the summer, and our summer research and internship fellowship program supports students who would otherwise receive little or no payment.

Our Furman Engaged! day every spring is a campus-wide showcase of our vibrant culture of Engaged Learning as students present their academic work and internships in every discipline, both inside and beyond the classroom.  Additionally, the URI office offers travel support to students presenting their research results at professional conferences throughout the year.
