The Furman Forum
The South Carolina Governors School for the Arts and Humanities
has been held at Furman since it opened in 1981. The school, however,
will be leaving this fall for its own facility, which is being constructed
in downtown Greenville. In your opinion, what has hosting the school meant
to Furman?
"Its
been beneficial because it attracts the best music students to campus
each summer. Its also been a tremendous recruiting tool as it has
attracted new students here."
Les Hicken, Music
I
think hosting the school this many years has been good publicity for Furman.
It is going to be hard to fill this void. I hope Furman can find something
that will continue to attract top students like these to campus each summer."
Giselle Williams, Personnel
"I
think having Furman host the school is really nice. It creates a positive,
learning atmosphere here in the summer. It will be kind of sad to see
them go."
John Moore, Facilities Services
"Getting
those kids on our campus has been a benefit. I think its important that
a school like this be held in a liberal arts setting. The students make
a big difference to us because they go to their high schools and tell
their friends about Furman."
Tom Buford, Philosophy
"It
has provided an opportunity for the Furman community to enjoy the work
of some outstanding students. And it has given them a chance to see what
an outstanding university is."
Charles Brewer, Psychology
