Chemistry department awarded research grant

Furman University’s Chemistry Department has been awarded one of 16 grants by the Beckman Scholars Program, a highly competitive awards program that supports research activities in the sciences by exceptionally talented undergraduate students.

The prestigious, $52,500 grant will be used to support the research of three Furman chemistry majors over a two-year period. The students will participate in two, 10-week summers of full-time research and up to 10 hours per week of research during one academic year. According to Lon Knight, chair of Furman’s Chemistry Department, the university’s first Beckman Scholars will be juniors Ginger M. Denison of Greensboro, N.C., and Marion R. Martin of Columbia.

Furman was the only Southeastern school selected for the honor and one of only five schools among the 16 that does not grant the Ph.D. degree.

The Department of Drama has changed its name to the Department of Theatre Arts. According to Doug Cummins, chair of the department, the new name more clearly reflects what the department does. “Drama is the printed text of dramatic literature. In addition to drama, we teach theatrical design, history, criticism, acting, directing and the whole realm of theatre art,” he says. “So, we ought to be called a theatre arts department.”
