Furman STEM Mentors

Started in Fall 2008, the Furman STEM Mentors program provides a structure for Furman science majors to connect with teacher-selected middle school students whose “potential is outweighed by circumstance”.  Students mentor gender-matched students for one session (generally about one hour) once a week.  Since Fall 2008, over 250 Furman mentors have participated, recording over 2000 contact hours.  Currently we are matching Furman students with students at Legacy Charter,  Berea MiddleNorthwest Middle SchoolLakeview Middle School and the Frazee Dream Center.

Since 2010, we have also linked Furman
Engaged! to this program by inviting our mentees (for most, the first time to visit a college campus) for a great day at Furman (see photo below).

We will hold a recruiting meeting in Kohrt Commons (Townes Science Center) on Thursday September 3rd  Pizza & Drinks start at 4:45 pm, meeting /Q&A 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm.  If that meeting time is not convenient - feel free to contact the program coordinator (Dr. Kaup) at any time with questions or complete the online application (see link below) and Dr. Kaup will be in touch.
