The first-year seminar program serves a unique and central role in Furman University’s core curriculum. Furman devotes intensive faculty and library resources to the FYW: only twelve students are in each seminar (Furman is one of only five colleges in the nation that provides the personal learning experience of a seminar this small) and a librarian is assigned to work individually with each class. The FYW teaches you to be a clear and concise writer and adept researcher both at the college level and for the professional world.

What can I expect from my first year seminar at Furman?

  • The topic of your seminar is designed by your professor to spark your intellectual curiosity and build your analytical and communication skills. Seminars do not focus on a major field of study or an eventual career.
  • The first-year seminar introduces you to the higher modes of thinking, reading, and writing that will enable you to succeed on the college level.
  • First-year writing seminars develop your skills in critical thinking and logical argument through a process of writing, rethinking, and rewriting.
  • Writing seminars are not just discussion classes; you will spend time workshopping with your writing in class, conferring with your professor about your work, and learning to edit your peers’ (and your own) writing.
  • College level research skills and experiences are emphasized in the writing seminar. You will work with a librarian assigned to your specific seminar to develop your facility with research.
  • The first-year writing seminars will also address other key competencies of academic writing such as citation formatting, grammar and punctuation, and academic integrity.
