As stated in Policy 111.2, the department Chair is responsible for hiring and supervising the activities of the department assistant and other departmental staff. Job vacancies must be posted internally, and there is generally an expectation that all qualified internal candidates should be interviewed for the position. The same types of “interviewing legalities” outlined above for faculty also apply for interviewing for staff positions.
Depending on the circumstances in your department, it can be useful to form a search committee to assist in the hiring process. Department members should be given an adequate opportunity to provide input into the hiring decision.
