Chairs are expected to manage all departmental approvals for courses both within the department and for courses where endorsement by other departments or programs is requested. New courses must be proposed using the course proposal system (CPS), which distributes the proposal to relevant committees such as the Curriculum Committee and Acadmic Policies Committee as necessary. Access to the CPS is monitored through Academic Records. Except for First Year courses (FYW and FYS), all new courses require a department vote.
New First Year courses require approval by the First Year Seminar Oversight Committee, while other new courses require approval by the Curriculum Committee. Courses for which core or global awareness experience credit is sought require approval by the Academic Policies Committee. All courses must be fully approved before sections of the course can be posted to the course listings for any term. Editorial changes to the amount of credit awarded, pre-requisites, enrollment restriction (by class standing or declared field of study), title, or description can be made by department chair request to the Associate Dean and University Registrar. Substantive changes to the content of any course require faculty approval.
