Greenville, South Carolina, Furman's home city

Greenville is consistently ranked one of the best places in the country to live. No other city combines a thriving metropolis and start-up culture with the warmth of a small town. Home to the Blue Ridge Mountains and one of the most admired Main Streets in America, Greenville offers students limitless opportunities for professional growth, a culturally rich downtown, and a touch of Southern hospitality.

Career Programs

career preparation

Greenville is fast-paced, yet still charming. Fortune 500 companies and rapidly growing start-ups continue to populate the area. Furman's relationships with local businesses allow students unique access to internship, research, and career opportunities in a variety of sectors. Large corporations like BMW, Fluor, General Electric and Michelin lead the way in hiring new Furman graduates. In fact, Greenville has the highest foreign manufacturing investment per capita in the nation.

Greenville is also home to Greenville Health System, one of the largest systems of its kind in the Southeast. Our campus has formed a unique partnership with Greenville Health System to develop educational programs and internships for students pursuing careers in medicine-related fields.

And Greenville's close proximity to Atlanta and Charlotte adds both to its economic development and engagement with the world.

The Peace Center in Greenville

arts and culture

Greenville has become a haven for the creative type. Start with the city's music scene. The Greenville Symphony Orchestra attracts renowned performers like Yo-Yo Ma, and several of Furman's music faculty are members of the orchestra. But if your tastes don’t cover the classical genre, Emmy-winning artists like Lady Antebellum and The Black Keys routinely take the stage at Bon Secours Arena. To sample Greenville's local sound, Smiley's Acoustic Café is the spot for open mic performances.

For a taste of theatre, the 2,100-seat Peace Center is the perfect place to catch a Broadway show on tour, such as Wicked, The Lion King, or The Book of Mormon. Centre Stage puts on contemporary dramas, comedies, and histories, and the Alchemy Comedy Theater spotlights local comedians with improv shows at Coffee Underground Theater.

In the mood for art? Get in some reflection time at the Greenville County Museum of Art, or get a glimpse of local artists at Gallery Seventeen or the Artists Guild.

Dining in greenville

Greenville's reputation as a foodie destination rivals any city in the South.

Our campus is just six miles from the heart of downtown, where Greenville's Main Street is lined with a range of Southern cuisine, tastes from the Carolina coast, and a variety of ethnic flavors. Roost is one of Greenville’s newer establishments that is all about reinventing Southern cuisine for the urban plate. Try the duck confit nachos or the Rooster burger covered in jalepenos. Afterward, enjoy a slice of cake from Brick Street Cafe near Fluor Field—home to Greenville's minor league baseball team—in the West End. For brunch, enjoy the Westin Poinsett’s Spoonbread restaurant and its large spread of granola, fresh fruit, pastries, Belgian waffles, and an omelet bar. Or stop by Sully’s Steamers for the best bagel sandwiches in town.

Outside of downtown, there are plenty of options. Grab a creative coffee (like a “snow leopard” or “dirty black hat chai”), pourover, smoothie, and/or breakfast sandwich at The Forest Coffeehouse in Travelers Rest. Everyday Organic, started by Furman grads Breighanna (Faugl) Newnham ’08 and William Newnham ’08, delivers a chicken salad that is a perfect blend of savory and creamy. And if it’s on the menu, don’t hesitate to order the quinoa pad thai. For something simpler, head to Upcountry Provisions in Travelers Rest. The bakery is a venture by Furman graduate Cheryl (Boles) Kraus ’09 and her husband, Steve, and all the deliciousness is baked on the premises. Upcountry Provisions is also known for its peanut butter diablo cookies.
